Greenpeace warns of destruction of Ukrainian nuclear power plant

According to media reports the environmental protection organization Greenpeace is worried about the safety of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar at the Dnieper river.

Nuclear safety experts are worried that the reactor block could not withstand a direct hit of heavy weaponry. The concrete protective cover has a strength of only 1.20 m.  A direct hit by artillery is likely to cause a core meltdown. Also a blackout caused by the destruction of the power grid could knock out the power plants cooling system thus creating a similar situation as in the Fukushima nuclear power plant where failure of the cooling system resulted in a core meltdown and uncontrolled spread of radiation.

The power plant is located in about 200 km distance of the current front line.
