According to Human Rights Watch separatists in Eastern Ukraine are subjecting civilians to forced labor. As witnesses state, civilians were detained for often minor violations, such as drinking beer in public.
Detainees are put into “punishment brigades” where they are force to conduct manual work for up to one month. Work includes preparing sand bags and barricades as well as kitchen work. The report states further that some detainees were deployed in an area that has been regarded as close to the front-line and risky for unarmed civilians.
Since such measures violate international humanitarian law, Human Rights Watch demands separatists to stop exposing civilians to forced labor and to threats near the front-line.
